To enable the vegetable industry to remain globally competitive, a National Vegetable Levy is collected to provide funding for research and development carried out via Horticulture Australia Limited (HAL). To ensure research and development programs directly benefit vegetable business, growers make the decisions regarding where the levy is spent. Money raised through the levy is matched by the Australian Government.

The National Vegetable Levy is payable by the producer on all vegetables produced in Australia. It may be collected by first purchasers, agents, merchants or exporters who forward the money to the Levies Revenue Service (LRS) which is then forwarded onto HAL. Producers who sell fresh vegetables by retail sale (ie. direct to the public by way of roadside stalls, shed sales, farm gate etc.) must forward their levy payment directly to LRS. Forms for this are available from all LRS offices or by accessing their website at www.daff.gov.au/levies .
