For vegetable production on the Swan Coastal Plain in Western Australia, water allocation within licences has historically been made on the basis of 15 megalitres per hectare per annum for year-round vegetable production.

Currently properties that draw more than 500 megalitres per year of groundwater have bores metered, so that water consumption can be monitored. The Department of Water is also currently installing water meters on all commercial properties on the Gnangara Mound.
